09/03/2011 - One wonders what he would make of last Thursday’s conviction and sentencing of five Roma and one Hungarian to a total of 29 years in prison for what prosecutors said was a racially motivated attack on a Hungarian student. Four of the six suspects had been held in detention since their arrest on 23 October 2009 even though their victim did not sustain any permanent or life-threatening injuries. If their conviction is upheld on appeal, most of them will serve out the balance of their sentences in prisons usually reserved for murderers and repeat violent offenders.

To the extent several of the defendants regularly intimidated, assaulted and robbed students at a local college they deserve to be punished. What is disconcerting about the verdict is that this is the second time in less than half a year Roma have been convicted of committing hate crimes against Hungarians when Roma tend to be the victims of such crime.

08/03/2011 - Starting International Women’s Day 2011, videos, films, photos, news, life stories and experiences can be shared by an estimated six-seven million Romani women worldwide through the campaign website created by the Romedia Foundation, a Budapest-based Roma advocacy organization.

Katalin Barsony, the managing director of the Romedia Foundation and a Romani activist herself, initiated the “I’m a Roma Woman” campaign in 2009 with the release of the first campaign video, which features five young Roma women from all over Europe who speak out about their experiences, their dreams for the future, about who they are. A year later, the campaign extended to the Western Balkans with a new video release produced in cooperation with CARE International North-West Balkans. The success of the campaign among the Roma activists of the world prompted the Romedia Foundation to create a new campaign website, a membership-based online empowerment tool by and for Romani women.

Animal rights groups are demanding a Slovak mayor be sacked after he urged gypsies to help him tackle the stray dog problem - by eating them.

Andrej Sabol who is mayor of Druzstevnej pri Hornade in Slovakia admitted to animal welfare officers that he had given permission to gypsies to catch and eat the dogs - although it was normally forbidden - to cut down on the numbers.

And he confirmed the ruling in an email to animal rights activists saying: 'The large number of stray dogs is a big problem, but I am proud that we have found a solution, because the Roma people eat them. So we are now letting them have them free of charge.

People are always complaining about the number of dogs roaming around. But rounding them up and keeping dogs in shelters is not cheap. This is a satisfactory solution for everyone.'

And he rejected the animal rights activists that complained about it saying: 'Dogs do not vote for me, but people do. And the people here require me to protect them from stray dogs. To be honest these [Roma] people would probably eat them anyway, we are just helping them along.'

Slovak animal protection society spokeswoman Romana Serfelova said: 'We know that many communities have problems with stray dogs, but this is not a solution.'

She has now called for the mayor to be sacked and charged under the country’s animal cruelty laws which forbid the eating of domestic animals.
